A guide to blog commenting

I am an active blogger with a practice of leaving comments on blogs that I read.   Also, I get excited to see people commenting on the blogs I write.  Hanging around in the Blogger world for quite some time now, I clearly understand the importance of comments, their intent and also how they can stir up our emotions- be it positive or negative 🙂

For sake of maintaining integrity on the web world, here are some guidelines for clean commenting:

  • Commenting is good. Do it with the best interest of both the blogger and the reader : It is , like I said, a good practice to leave comments on blogs. Write it if you have a compliment, a suggestion, an observation , a clarification or a statement of agreement to make.

  • Criticism is good. Keep it clean : We all love to criticize. But let us keep in mind that it is like a boomerang. What you throw, comes back to you within no time! Make a constructive criticism while commenting. Let your purpose be to improve the content and knowledge of the blogger instead of demeaning him/her in the open world.

  • Any false information on the blog, alert the writer : Mistakes happen. We are all human, after all 🙂 Alert the writer with a benefit of doubt. He might not have known about the fallacy of the information. Give him your suggestion through a comment. And see if he is taking corrective measures. If he doesn’t, leave another comment stating your observation and let the other readers be aware of the discrepancy too. But be polished.

  • You have more knowledge about the subject of the blog, share it : Via a link to your blog , or another supporting web-link, let the world know of the additional information.  Knowledge sharing is good.

  • Stick to the norms of the website/blog/forum : There might be forums or websites who let you comment the way you want without compelling you to censor your words. But not all websites work this way. Websites have their specific rules. You will have to adhere to that while commenting. Your language and your expression need to be monitored by yourself, first, before commenting.

  • Be genuine:  While commenting, genuineness is imperative. Whether it is a compliment or a criticism, be honest. It really helps.

When you ,as a blogger receive abusive comments, the reaction is instantaneous and understandable. But I suggest that you do not take it too personally, and to react moderately. Your calm and composure should intervene on your behalf and resolve the issue. As a measure, please follow these:

  • Moderate the comments, support healthy commenting , criticize and hence eliminate abusive comments.
  • Maintain integrity of your website and take things to your control.

Most of the times, such issues of abusive and intolerant commenting occurs when there is a conflict of thought among individuals. They might sometimes lack the sophistication during commenting. At such times, let us all take a deep breathe and calm down 🙂 We are polished, aren’t we? So, let us behave well.

After all, comments are a reflection of our attitude, let us project ourselves well on the virtual world!
